Any case of an illnesses must be reported to the school.  A medical certificate must be produced to certify absence due to an illness.  Learners suffering from infectious diseases should not be sent to school as they can spread the disease very quickly to fellow learners.

SCHOOL NURSE

The school has a qualified nurse to attend to  minor illnesses and accidents at school.  The clinic is modestly equipped and registered with the Medical Council of Zambia and operates during normal school hours.  The school nurse is also on duty during all school functions held out of normal school hours.

▪ Normally the respective parent or guardian is informed in the event the child falls ill at school.  In a dire emergency, the child is either taken to the nearest hospital or to any one of the school's two appointed medical practitioners.

The nurse helps learners in developing their full potential in health education.  Her activities are guided by the standards, policies and procedures of LICEF School.  She takes full responsibility for assessing the health status of learners, the school personnel and the sanitary environment of the school.

▪ In addition, she counsels learners, staff and parents concerning identified needs.

She also provides guidance and health instructions within her working area and the classroom setting.

Records are kept of learners and staff who require special care, for example, diabetics, convulsive disorders, allergies, (like asthma), high blood pressure, etc.

Liaison is done with other health providers in the implementation of control of communicable diseases and screening tests so that the learner is fit enough to learn and be happy at school.

Emphasis is placed on the isolation and treatment of those with obvious colds, rashes and other contagious infections to prevent their spread to others.

The nurse in addition prepares and submits drug requisitions regularly for the purchase of drugs and maintains a monthly statistic of the clinic attendance which she submits to the Administrative Manager.
